Sylvia Cuenca Trio
with Roni Ben-Hur, guitar, and Harvie S, bass

These consummate and well-traveled jazz musicians have worked as a trio under one another’s leadership the past couple of years at such venues as Blues Alley in Washington, D.C., Mezzrow and Zinc Bar in Greenwich Village, Vitello’s in LA, Cafe Stritch in San Jose, Chez Hanny in San Francisco’s Portola District and here at Bird & Beckett in SF’s Glen Park neighborhood.

Picking up a few West Coast gigs this spring, they’re hitting Bird & Beckett Tuesday 3/26, then Roni & Sylvia head down the coast to play a trio date at Jazz by the Sea, perched on a bluff overlooking Crystal Cove just south of Corona del Mar. Then, it’s up to Fort Bragg, rejoined by Harvie for a couple of nights at the North Coast Brewing Company’s Sequoia Room. Camp followers of any or all of these three fine NYC-based musicians, and of this trio specifically, are encouraged to start here at Bird & Beckett.

Jazz critic Gary Giddins wrote in the Village Voice: “A limber and inventive guitarist, Ben-Hur keeps the modernist flame alive and pure, with a low flame burning in every note … [He’s] a guitarist who knows the changes and his own mind.”

Harvie S recently collaborated with Roni on a new cd, “Introspection” — just the latest in a raft of recordings he’s made dating back to 1982, both as leader and sideman — make that  twenty albums as a leader, fifteen as a co-leader, and over four hundred albums as a sideman!

Sylvia has had a long, high profile career back East, since heading for New York City as a young player out of San Jose — she was the drummer in Joe Henderson’s quartet for four years, touring the world; and traveled for 17 years with the great trumpeter Clark Terry. Here, her first professional gig was with Eddie Duran at Pearl’s, when it was an after-hours basement club in the Great Eastern Restaurant on Jackson Street.

Roni, Harvie and Sylvia’s rapport can’t but deepen with each trio performance and recording session, whether back home in the Big Apple or out on the road.
